What is "anarcho" about "Anarcho-Primitivism"?

"Primitivism is a pipe dream - it offers no way forwards in the struggle for a free society. Often its adherents end up undermining that struggle by attacking the very things, like mass organisation, that are a requirement to win it. Those primitivists who are serious about changing the world need to re-examine what they are fighting for."

For a long time now I have been thinking about the actual meaning behind the "anarcho" in "Anarcho-primitivism". Also, I have asked myself why have I given an ideology that i do not subscribe to so much thought? It all comes down to the conclusion that primitivism and primitivists have nothing to do with anarchism, ideologically speaking.

It would seem that the movement/idea/current mainly housed within the US is an interesting intellectual question that wastes a lot of time trying to pass itself off as an anti-mass movement social movement, which recruits within the autonomous/anti-parliamentary left while claiming to not be left but still is left, somehow, and hopes to do all these things with out us or them realizing the contradictions looming overhead. As libcom's article will adress, I was sold on anti-civ ideology until I could not explain to myself what to do with some 5 billion human-beings and what that question and answer have to do with anarchism or the social liberation from work, can you?

With that being said, I would like to state being against primitivism does not make you an enemy of "nature". Primitivists do not have a monopoly on eco-defense.

hey man, I saw your comment on that one feral visions article on infoshop, sucks that they deleted your comment and then subsequently stopped all posting there; (my posts are surprisingly still up, it was one time out of many where I figured I'd just be a jerkoff and laugh at the primitivists, usually that gets a post deleted). just wanted to say, love your blog, and keep up the good fight. I have a blog on infocities (infoshop blogs) so you might be interested in a post I'll be making soon rebutting some green anarchy bullshit about science. anyway take care man. -Y

You should check out my most recent essay "Bridgeable Chasms" at infoshop. In the comments section I took anarcho to task over the 6 billion question. He, like Andrew Flood, failed to understand what opposing mass society means to primitivist anarchy.

You fail to understand this point as well. I love how you say you dropped out of being interested because of the 6 billion individual question, a fantasy strawman that needs a generous amount of fallacy and speculation to create such a conclusion.

Did you ever think to write anyone with your concerns? From what I understand, most anarchists are fairly approachable. I look forward to "Y"'s critique of primitivst critique of science.

Concerning the openness of primitivists in discussing their practical application of "anarcho-pimitivism" is not what I would call approachable. Everytime some tries to discuss the questions everyone seems to have concerning primitivism our posts either get censored by infoshop or they just delete the entire thread and make it impossible to continue or even read the old posts. Also, I attempted to post the libcom critique on infoshop news under Anarchist Opinion, still not posted by infoshop administrators... so much for openness or being approachable for discussion.

    love,

HPwombat, I would just like to tell you that i have read your lengthy discussion with "anarcho" and must say that you continuously ignored the questions that are constantly asked of primitivists to answer. We, the techno-freak mass society anarchists ask what to do with the 5 billion plus human beings currently living on this planet who have to go and when pushed to answer the question your only answer is that green-anarchists, anti-civ, feral, primitivists are not for the death or "final solution". Rather, as you stated in your discussion with "anarcho", primitivists are not for some program, society, or organization that will impose primitivism upon the worlds human population. Oh no, that would just be too stalinistic or resemble something of the statist side of things. No, no, you the primitivists would just like to introduce a rewilding to us humans, just let us rewild ourselves, as if some green beared half-man half-tree fiary whispers the great prophecy of primitivism and we will leap out of our chairs, cars, and wheelchairs and run into the woods to finally become wild, autonomous, and wild again! oh the glory! blah.

I am sorry if my post seems real nasty and negative but it comes a time when frustration with the lack of two way discussion has stopped because the primitivists will constantly evade answering the question. So, remember, even after reading your discussion with "anarcho" and seeing that you ignored answering that one burning question by pretending to answer it with a dash of using the buzz world autonomy and all in all primitivists are not about introducing anything they just want to rewild. well then rewild, stop posting on political and anarchist websites, leave your computer, and go rewild. I read your "bridgabke chasm" and there were no more answers concerning the anarchist-communist and social-anarchist critique of primitivism.

Also, there will never be any new questions or criticism until you, the primitivists answer the questions and concerns we have. Maybe primitivists dont want to answer the question for themselves because the answer is far to scary?

First, thanks for the response (or allowing me to respond to your blog). I realized I hadn't responded to this comment and figured I should. I should note that I am not a primitivist, though I do find them appealing and in some degrees consider their practice noble.

What to do with the billions of people we have on the planet? Well, we accept an end to a life of accumulation, meaning exactly what it does in capitalist society, we struggle to survive in a poverty, be its a poverty we control. By acting socially, we will connect, create our lives and flourish without privilege and without accumulation. We will take care of our necessities so we can have all the time in the world to enjoy life for what it is. This is of course ideal, if I had my way kind of stuff.

What would occur if everything was taken from today and thrown into a democratic society some consider anarchist? Technology would become far more political than it is currently but we would also see massive reductions in production as people turned down unnecessary labor. After this occurred is speculative beyond general trends.

The scale of reductions is questionable. Even with a massive reduction, what is sustainable to civilization may not be enough to sustain a human occupied wilderness. The treatment of primitives is as another sub-category of people with interests in general society and thus would have democratic rights, like all would in the most ideal anarchist civilization. Or they would be granted autonomy and their own lands, but this autonomy is dictated by civilization. The ability for primitives to even create a mass is questionable because of the current destruction of the wilderness and it is further questionable as to how much land primitivists would be granted to become primitives. Then there is the continued conflicts of interest through majority desire.

Civilization is its infrastructure if the people didn't live in it. This infrastructure has to be maintained. If we choose not to maintain it, it falls into ruin and no longer exists as it once did, being reclaimed by the wild, no longer a civilization. If we only maintain our necessities, the infrastructure of civilization will fall to ruin, excluding that which is necessary until it too can collapse if population becomes less of a crisis.

If you want to be a "techno" anarchist you might want to go through the entire process of everything technological you would like to see exist, discover its resources and find alternative methods of creating such things that wouldn't rely on dangerous methods like mining or destructive methods that use poisonous chemicals. Also the energy source has to be truly sustainable, which clean alternatives have yet to prove. This isn't a litmus test to see if it is a real anarchist technology, but if you are going to win, you might as well know what you are getting into.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
